More than 300 people attended North Carolina’s Annual Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony on Sunday.

The event, at Temple Beth Or on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh, had a candlelight vigil and a prayer service as children of Holocaust survivors told their parent’s stories.

In another room of the temple, people read aloud the names of more than 6 million Jewish people who died nearly during World War II. The reading lasted more than 12 hours.

The event this year had extra security for the first time. Earlier in April, the FBI warned of an increase in hate crimes against Muslim and Jewish Americans as Israel’s war with Hamas approaches seven months.

“You look at the world today; you look at the antisemitism that’s rampant in this country right now. We always say it could never happen again,” Marc Grossman said. “It could, and the only way to prevent it is by remembering [it]. Never forget."
